Fedora Core 4, Osx & Samba

2005.12.16  ·  Linux  ·  0 Comments

I've been setting up a Fedora Core 4 box as a dev server, and when it came to connecting to it via Samba from a Mac, Finder would hang, requiring a relaunch.

I hit Google up for some answers and found out that Samba needs to be updated for it to work correctly with Macs. These Samba 3.0.20b rpms did the trick. Just download them and, as root, do the following in the directory where the downloaded samba rpm files are.

rpm -U samba*

Then restart Samba using one of the many methods available. I still go to /etc/init.d and perform a

./smb restart

Call me old fashion, but I prefer this method to using the services script.

If you don't have command line access to your server, all this is doable using webmin.

Yahoo! buys del.icio.us

It's not really a surprise so much as an expected event. It's was either going to be Yahoo!, Google or EBay.

Congrats to all the del.icio.us people, their investors and the Yahoo! gang. It's going to be interesting to see what happens now del.icio.us has all the resources it could have ever wanted. And to be teamed with the same guys who bought Flickr, they must be going web2.0 crazy over there.

Embrace Your Smallness

Adam DuVander has guest-blogged and article called Embrace Your Smallness on Thom Singer's site.

The biggest mistakes of my young career have come from pretending to be something I'm not. Individuals and small teams often try to appear big. A consultant might use the Royal We. A salesman might say "I'll run that by programming team" when he is the programming team.I have pretended to be big. You have probably pretended to be big, too. It's really easy to fall into the trap, because huge corporations are our most available role models.

Why not IBM & Intel?

2005.12.01  ·  Apple  ·  0 Comments

Just a crazy thought I've had while listening to the TUAW podcasts - What do you think would happen if Apple decided to sell both IBM and Intel powered Macs? They could offer a range of PowerPC computers and a range of Intel-based computers. It would mean added hassel for Apple, but it would be a great choice for customers [well...me anyway] and would take Apple to another level [in the sense that no company has ever done it successfully before].

Just a crazy thought.

TUAW Podcast About The iMac Service

2005.12.01  ·  Apple  ·  0 Comments

Am just listening to the TUAW podcast about the .Mac service. They're not giving it a very good review, and it kind of makes me glad I've never joined/used the .Mac service. The syncing sounds like it's a good idea, but the rest [mail, storage, etc] sounds like a waste of time/money.

...

They're really giving .Mac/Apple a hard time. Now they're suggesting that if you have a .Mac account, you should use a standard WebDAV client as opposed to the .Mac tools that come with OSX.

And this is the first time I've heard them pronouce their website. It comes out sounding like 'too-awe'.

TUAW is part of the ever growing Weblogs, Inc. Network group - 'now with more than 80 blogs'.

I've found it best to skip the heavy homepage and go directly for the RSS feed. The advertising on the site and in the RSS feed are easily twarted with the AdBlock extension for Firefox [as long as your aggregator is browser-based].

You can access their podcast [sponsored by BestBuy] via this category link.

Update: I just listened to the TUAW podcast on the iPod nano. I wouldn't have believed that 2 people could crap on for 24mins about an mp3 player, but there you have it. It almost seemed like it was a comedy skit.
