War affects everyone, not just those directly involved in the fighting. This webpage is a simple attempt to demonstrate one of the more quantifiable effects of war: the financial burden it places on our tax dollars.
Hey!!!...that's expensive.

There were two G5 case mods posted on ./ that deserve a mention. Mainly because they were able to squeeze so much disk space into them.
The first one, the G5 Jam, adds 2 extra SATA drives [totally 4 drives in all], so that a 1000GB RAID can be implemented.
Useful Information To Remember: Many digital video editing labs are trying to capture HDTV format uncompressed. Depending on the frame rate and resolution, you need write speeds of at least 120 megabytes per second (MB/s) and as high as 180MB/s. If you stripe four drives into a RAID 0 set, you should get 200MB/s+ sustained read and write speed.
The second mod uses the Swift Data 200 modification to add an extra 3 drives [5 total].

I've been doing some research on HTTP Conditional Get(s), and found some great discussions on the topic. If you're interested, start here and find your own way around - if you need to go any further. At present, I'm implementing them in PHP, and if you're inclined to do the same, you might want to have a looksee at this page, and if you're thinking of implementing HCG because you're building an aggregator, or something that consumes syndication feeds, you really should check out this great software.

This may be old news to some, but it sounded pretty cool to me when I heard about it recently. These guys [apparently one group of many] are doing their own translations of manga that the bigger comic companies either think aren't worth it, or simply haven't gotten around to yet. If you're a big manga reader, it's worth a looksee.
The process/method is called scanslations - for obvious reasons.

Saw on
./ today that a new version of
POVRay [3.6.0] has been released.
And while I was on he POVRay site, I saw a link to
Moray - A Wireframe Modeller for POV-Ray. Pity it's only for Windows.
And wait, there's more =)
I also sound this
3D Model Search Engine from the Princeton Shape Retieval and Analysis Group. Unfortunately I having a bad relationship with Java at the moment, and seeing that this engine requires it, I'm going to have to re-visit it later.

Right on the heals of the Venus Transit, come the news that the Cassini probe has reached Phoebe - Saturn's largest moon.

All feeds are valid, even though I haven't finished them just yet =)
I think I'll skip the fancy 'your feed is valid' images they offer for valid feeds.

I was hopeing to see this in person, but the whole sky is covered by a thick cover of cloud. Even if it was a clear sky, I think were I am in Japan is not a very good place to view it [according to what I've read on the topic so far].
My second best bet was to watch it on NASA TV, but my Internet connection is having real trouble dealing with this. It's playing the sound, which is kindof annoying [Listening to middle-aged NASA geeks explain how excited they are].
But, to my complete surprise [because I come from a country where they show nothing but commercials on TV] the Japanese have a live coverage of it happening. I can't really understand all that they're saying, but the visuals are good.
Doh!!! It was only a short program showing the start of it. Damn. Oh well...for now it's back to listening to NASA TV. Maybe I'll get some more visuals on the evening news.

I've decided on a new XML-RPC implementation for DT. Rather than using Useful Inc.'s, which seems to be quite popular, but not very well documented, I'm using Keith Devens' code, mainly because on his site he has a demo of how to ping weblogs.com and how to implement the Blogger API. Ha!

Another great DIY project from the people at Flakey.
Speaking of wireless, and great projects - Apple have just released the Airport Express.
Enjoy your iTunes music library in virtually any room of your house. Share a single broadband Internet connection and USB printer without inconvenient and obtrusive cables. Create an instant wireless network on the go. Extend the range of your current wireless network. How many devices do you need to do all this? Just one.
