TC1000 Linux [Finally]

2004.03.27  ·  Linux  ·  0 Comments

So I've finally gotten around to installing Linux on my TC1000. It was much easier than expected. I installed RH9, but I think I've give Debian 3 a go once I download it and burn the CDs. I'm in the process of setting up the pen and wireless card at present, but apart from that everything seems to be ok. Haven't tried the modem yet, but I'm connecting to the Internet via my LAN, so it's of no immediate use. The battery power indicator doesn't seem to work, but I can wait for that as well.

As for performance, it's heaps better. If you own a TC1000, you know that XP runs like a dog with 4 broken legs. Under Linux though, KDE is very responsive, which is good. I've loaded Blender 2.30, at it works well. I'm not talking high-end graphics workstation, but it's usable and responsive. Having said that, I haven't had any major scenes happening yet, but...

All in all, I'm stoked. It gives the little TC1000 a new lease on life. If you're interested in trying to run Linux on your TC1000, check out the Handhelds.org TC1000 Linux Wiki, and also this page, which seems to be the first and most conprehensive page dealing with the subject.

The Broken

So there's this 'hacking videozine' called TheBroken.org. In the faq they state;

no, we are not hackers. and we don't claim to be l33t. we keep our ear to the underground and report on the tools and methods in use today.

which is fair enough, right. Worth checking out, so I use BitTorrent to download the 150+MB avi. Took my 128Kbps AirH connect about 6 hours to do it, and then I discover that the avi is broken. The sound works fine but the video stalls on the first frame. That sucks.

And the local council round here thinks that my town is never going to get ADSL - damn.

C5 And C6

Lately I've been both busy and in hospital. Busy fro m heaps of work - software development for the company I work for, software development for DT [which will be released soon =)], systems administration for my SOHO network [which I've neglected a little over the winter], etc, etc...

I've been in hospital because two bones in my neck [C5 and C6] decided to crush the nerve that lies between them. No over-nighter yet, but hours of waiting, a couple of X-Rays and an MRI scan. And there's been a lot of sleeping going on as well because of the pain killers I've been taking. Seems to be working though...nothing like a bit of relaxation to get you back up and ready to go.

In any case, because of these two points I've had little time for writing. And I haven't been too enthusiastic either. It's a shame 'cause I enjoy writing and want to tune my skills [what little there is].

A while ago, to force myself to write, I started doing reviews of Japanese Blogs. I started with Geisha Asobi, but before I got too far another blogger [apparently living in Japan] started doing the same thing, so I stopped to let him have a go of it. He did really well, but then it turned out that he was actually living in London and that his whole blog was just some sort of art piece. And now it's not even active any more [Which is kinda stupid IMO...if it's art, let it lie so poeple can see it]. He probably used it to pass high school, but that's life.

Anyways, the point of this ramble is...well, just to ramble. To get myself back into the groove and start saying something. Writing something. Anything =)

I'll think of something more interesting to talk about...promise.

New 'Puter

I'm going to get myself another computer. I'll be back to the good old days of bit and pieces lying around in no time =) I'm thinking of something over 2GHz, with a shitload of RAM and disk space, a great graphics card and maybe even a DVD burner [or if not at least a CD burner / DVD ROM].

People are so bored and loney that now they are toothing.

As you may already know I have a fetish for unusual computer cases. This one is pretty standard, but good.
