The crazy people are out again. I first spotted this on ./ [I really have to get dt's news aggregator working]. Here's an older ./ article as well. Freedom To Tinker has way more information regarding what's being called the Super-DCMA. So far it's only an American thing [and on closer inspection, only some states], but with the current Australian prime minister's plans to have his nose surgically implanted into George.Dubbya.Bush's arse, who knows [nose] what could happen.
No firewalls, No VPNs...except those run by approved organisations [aka corps that will allow a t-junction to the CIA, NSA, etc].
What the %$#@ are they thinking? Or more to the point, how do [we let] people get away with this sort of thing. Oh...I remember...FUD.
Dan Gilmore has a small piece that puts things into perspective.

Macromedia have released and interesting product to compliement Flash and no doubt make it more and more popular.
From their site: You can develop Macromedia Flash applications people can use both online and offline, right from their desktops. Macromedia Central will help users more easily interact with information on the Internet, and help Macromedia Flash MX developers and designers create, distribute, and sell Macromedia Flash applications.
Sounds good.

I just uploaded the deepthought codebase to r0nin.org. Turned out simpler than I thought. Had a silly issue with logging on to the MySQL server for a few moments, but I just had to set the db host to localhost. Posted my first after creating myself as a user. Trumps...it's all happening. Gonna have to get a blogroll happening. My version of one anyways.

The website of Al Jazeera, an arab TV network which has had a policy to show 'the human side' of the war by displaying the effect of the bombing raids in Baghdad, is under attack. I wonder which country, that is currently at war [with Iraq], is responsible for that. The /. story [4l-j4z333ra 0wn3d] smells of mesh-backs.

Hanging in Surry Hills this arvo before heading out to Bondi, so I thought [being the fucked up nerd I am] I'd test posting from an older browser. I was hopeing for something a little older and more diverse than IE 5, but I'll settle for it. It's on a rreeaallllyy slow Windows98 box, connected via a rreeaallllyy slow modem connection [I'm talking 14.4k]. Frustrating as hell, but so far all seems to be performing [working] well. Coolness.
Worth noting, the 'puter doesn't have the Georgia font, so it's dropped back to what looks like Verdana, and some of the style sheet properties [DIV margins or padding - have to check] aren't being applied.
Also, the Busta Rhymes LP, Genesis, sounds pretty cool.

It's a few days old, but worth remembering. Michael Moore won the 2003 Best Documentary Oscar for Bowling For Columbine. Rightly so as well [This documentary is breaking ground in the box office, and is one of the most controversial docos to date, taking into account the current war on Iraq]. Anyways, he used his acceptance-speech-time to dis George.Dubbya.Bush. I cant think of anyone who deserves a good dissing more than him at present [mesh-backed mf]. MM has been getting heaps from the mass media, but what's new?
Funny thing I noticed while watching MM's little speech was how aware the front rows of the audience were that they were being recorded. They were all in a state of shock and didn't know how to react. And they call themselves actors...ha! Take a stand you money hungry wimps ;)

Found a relatively intertesting blog today. Best thing about it - the owner seems to be doing something similar to me [and surely thousands of other]...developing blog software. But this blog [called Deep Black] uses Java, MySQL, etc. I'm going pure LAMP[PP]. And I'm not targeting the individual so much and the individuals in a micro-org. Collaboration my good man...collaboration.
Just on that, I'm so stoke to finally be writing direct to rose. I know I sound like a newbie dingbat, but I guess it kinda like falling in love...you're never too old [or experienced] to get that giddly feeling when doing something new [or something you've been planning for a while]. Hope I never loose that feeling for new things.
Deep Black [I know...I picked up on the similar name] should add User Friendly URLs to it M2 & M3 feature list, cause it's query strings suck.

The old god of PR isn't really watching over the Iraqi invaders today. As more of their mistakes take out friendly soldiers and Iraqi civilians public opinion for the 'War On Terror: Desert Storm II' fades.
5 times 56k through your modem. The technology has been with us for years according the Nicholas. We'll see. Sure would help a lot of people. No doubt you'll have to upgrade to a new modem, even though software should be able to do most of the work [compression] involved.
I love it when I see 3D/virtual world stories posted on /., so here are some links [which I should be noting anyways]. The good 'ole Blaxxun company...hope they improve their product. Linden Labs - Explore a 3D online world lived in and built by its participants. And the latest, There.com, which has been reviewed by Extreme Tech, is in public beta.
mmmm...public beta...one day.

That's what the seppos are calling the bombardment of Bagdad. Everything has to have a name so the average Joe can relate to it. 500+ cruise missles, costing around half a billion dollors, sent it in under 12 hours. US troops are on their way to Bagdad. Apache helicopters taking out Iraqi tanks. Reporters are 'embedded' with US troops, boasting about KIAs they have witnessed and filming reports from the top of moving tanks, dressed in full battle gear.

I saw this on a TShirt. Some celebrity was wearing it. One of the women from Starship Troopers. Wish Deepthought had the ability to attach files 'cause I'd go and find the picture and post it. Anyways, he's gone and given the Iraqi leader 48 hours to exile himself from Iraq. After that, the Yanks, Poms & Aussies are going in. Fuck John Howard is a weak bastard. I don't ever want to see or hear him again.

I thought as much. Of the 5 items listed in the previous Big Weekend post, I achieved none of them. I started none of them. So what did I do?...Not much. I did do some Deepthought work, of which I'm stoked, but it's not nearly enough. I have to manage my time better. Back to the old weekly timetable again I think. It's the only way. I have managed to simplify my life a little [I don't go out, have very few friends in which I stay in contact with & work takes up most of my time anyways] so the timetable should be easy enough to work out. Sticking to it is another thing, but my desire to start my own company is strong enough to do it.

There was an escape from the off-world colonies three weeks ago...and while all that was happening, I was coding Deepthought. And loving it.

The figure that slouched there was a fair approximation of the one he glimpsed daily in mirrors. Thin, high-shouldered, a forgettable face beneath short dark hair. He needed a shave, but then he usually did.

When I first started going to Holy Cross College I joined the swimming team. Even then I really wasn't into competing, but I enjoyed the 6am starts because it got me out of the house and the early commute suited me as I hated being on a bus full of grumpy adults and over excited school kids. Once there, training consisted of laps, laps & more laps, dotted with the occational 50m sprint. Needless to say, the coach didn't really have a sporting mind. And, in fact, for most of my time in the team our coach was Brother John [a Brother is kindof like a nun. a western version of a monk]. As a whole, I didn't really like doing laps, although I saw the logic [limited as it is] in it. Sometimes I would get into the feel of it and cruise along without even realising how far I was swimming. That was nice. Now, after almost 20 years, I'm doing laps again. This time in the pool that belongs to the building I live in. Pretty small compared to the Ryde Olympic Pool that HCC used, but much more enjoyable this time. Not as much expectation on me. Hardly any from other people [no coach, no team], and only a little from myself [because I'm still stoked that I'm actually swimming again, and how much I'm enjoying it]. I can't really bliss out in this pool because it's so small. 11 strokes and I'm at the other end. But it is nice to swim. My body loves it, and my mind is coming around [although there are alot of other things my mind is still more interested in ;) ]. ????is going well, but I need to practice more if I'm going to finish the first 20 weeks on a high. ACP sucks. Can't wait to flick that.

Just a small lane as opposed to a road. Done a small flow chart to help me get through the Post, Blogs & Users menu items. Not too tricky, but I always seem to be either out of time or busy battling. Damn I hate that.

Saw a demo of a product called Team Base today. Workflow / asset management / publication production / everything software. Made me realise how much easier it was to start a big software project like that. Back in the San Francisco days. Lot harder now. But mot impossible. Saw a lot of features that would be neat to include in deepthought. Made me think about the scope of a software project. And therefore target audience. What would be the profile of the target audience for deepthought? Micro-organisation. Teams of people working on different parts of projects. I don't think I have the words to describe them. Better find those words. Scripting News has a big rant on Google today. Strange to think that a company that has been so good at providing search technologies should decide to go into more. Why do people think it is companies that should grow? Why can't the guys just start another venture and buy things like Blogger? Don't they understand that it confuses their market? And breeds suspision...which may well be warrented in this case.

./ suggests a idea that will not doubt one day take hold. Video Blogs. Doesn't get much cred from the crowd. Apparently the Australian Federal Police have raided some ISPs. [to 'seek the identity of particular subscribers' in relation to their activity and files stored on the ISP's servers]. I feel safer already. I could be wrong, but it reads like Dave Winer is jealous. Just reads.

Long title eh? It's all test data in one form or another. As stated in my last post, I'm pretty stoked at the speed at which I'm going through the tasks associated with building this, 6th version, of deepthough group[blog]ware. still not sure exaclty what i'm going to do with it, or how, but i'm following my heart. and the old - if you build it they will come - thing. I'm running really late on some emails and I'm almost overdue on a postcard. Where does the time go. I'm blaming work. Fucking 9-5 in your face shit. I reckon a career just gets in the way of your life. There's a quote for the masses ;) Man I'm tired.

This 6th version of deepthought is feeling pretty good so far. Far more functionality with far less effort. Gotta like that. Means less code. Usually means better quality code. We'll see. Via /. a guy who calls himself GSurface posted this story about a barebones notebook case. First ever apparrently. I can here a hushed Horay!!! from DIYers everywhere. The mini-ITX based server I set up a few weeks ago just rocks. No a squeak out if it. Gonna bring out of the box and sit it on the desk for a while...maybe under the monitor. Just gotta rebuild the PIII500 for Jon and I'll be able to fill that box with storage stuff. There's a Blogger + Google FAQ out, which will no doubt calm a few nerves, but will no doubt cause a few theories to start playing up. Damn those guys look happy. Still possible to become a millionaire over night. By the signing of a document. Tim Bray has a weblog.
